The House of Baratheon

At Storm's End

Minas Baratheon
Lord of Storm's End
Defender of the Stormlands
Age 67

Minas, born in the year 23 AL, was the only son of Lord Brendan Baratheon and the Lady Leitis Penrose-Baratheon. He became Lord of Storm’s End in the year 57 AL upon the death of his father. Minas’s grandfather was Orys Baratheon, a powerful general and the bastard brother of Aegon the Conqueror, and his grandmother was the daughter of Argrilac the Arrogant, last of the Storm Kings. Although he possesses Targaryen blood, Minas takes after his grandmother’s ancient line. He is a proud man, with a strong sense of duty and possesses dogged moral character. He is known as Minas the Defender for his unyielding love for the Stormlands and his determination to establish the House Baratheon as a powerful entity in Westeros. He has spent his entire reign strengthening the Marches bordering neighboring lands and reinforcing the alliances made with the many Baratheon vassals acquired after the defeat of the Storm Kings.

In the year 51 AL, Minas married Lady Caitlin Swann of Stonehelm. The Swanns were powerful Marcher Lords, and Brendan Baratheon thought it best to take a daughter of an important vassal to wed his only son. Although his wife was very haughty and tended to overindulge in expensive fineries, Minas loved her dearly. To him, she was a symbol of the wealth and prestige his new House had achieved in only three generations. He remained very faithful to her, and only sired one bastard child. (The Witch of Fellwood succeeded in seducing Minas) Caitlin died giving birth to their last daughter in 68 AL. After her death, it is said that Minas’s heart became as hard as the stones of Storm’s End. The only warmth and affection displayed was to Rhoswen, the daughter born at the death of his beloved Caitlin.

Orrin Baratheon
Heir to the Lord of Storm's End
Firstborn of Minas Baratheon
Age 37

Orrin Baratheon was born in 53 AL to the Lord Minas and Lady Caitlin. As firstborn son, Orrin was raised as the heir-apparent of House Baratheon. It was often said of Orrin that he was a spitting image of his great-great-grandfather, Argrilac the Arrogant. His father expected much from Orrin, but even as a boy he was stubborn, overconfident, and uncouth. Because of his ill behavior and manners, the Lady Caitlin had nothing to do with her son. Women were like strangers to Orrin, and he certainly was no gentleman like his father. Orrin possesses great physical strength, and a fierce fighter. Unfortunately his brash behavior and hubris make him a poor commander. (He often gives no regard to strategy and cunning) Orrin wields the Great Hammer of the Storm Kings, Thunderstrike.

In 69 AL, when Orrin was 16, he married the young Targaryen Princess, Valyra. (Daughter of Jaehaerys and Alysanne Targaryen) The Baratheons and Targaryens thought it wise to arrange a marriage and establish further the relationship between closely related Houses. The Princess dreaded leaving the Royal Court of King’s Landing and marrying the boorish son of Lord Baratheon. She bore Orrin only one child, their son Kieran, and then refused him in her chambers thereafter. Orrin took many women into his own chambers, and sired numerous bastards. Although this greatly displeased Lord Minas, his father had no solid reason to displace Orrin as heir to Storm’s End.

Canice Baratheon
Captain of the Storm Guard
Second son of Minas Baratheon
Age 32

Canice Baratheon was born in the year 58 AL and was the second son of Minas and Caitlin. Canice was blessed with his father’s astuteness and resolve, but his mother’s beauty, charm, and flamboyance. Known across the Storm Lands as the charming, level-headed Baratheon son, only those who knew him personally could see his calculating nature and his sheer vanity. He is a cunning warrior, and wields the sword Tempest. The sword was awarded to Orys Baratheon after he defeated the last Storm King, and was a mythical Targaryen blade. It is rumored that the sword fell to Canice because the Targaryen blood from his great-grandfather burned within his veins, and he often displayed many traits common of the Royal House. He was made Captain of the Storm Guard by his father, and reluctantly commanded the Knights of Storm’s End. He was an adept commander, but preferred to keep to himself in his chambers within the Baratheon Keep.

In 76 AL, under the influence of his sister Keira, Lord Minas had Canice wed to his cousin Fiona Toyne. (The daughter of Lyonel Toyne and Keira Baratheon) Although they consummated the marriage, they were unable to have children. Canice accused his wife and cousin of being barren, while Fiona argued Canice was impotent. The two are very close, not romantically, but rather like two platonic companions. The marriage is considered to be a farce, and is the source of constant gossip among the commonfolk of the Stormlands.

Moira Baratheon
Firstborn daughter of Minas Baratheon
Age 30

Moira was born in 60 AL, and was the first daughter of Lord Minas and Lady Caitlin. She refused the pampering her mother wished to pour on her when she was very young. She was also mistreated by her eldest brother Orrin. She was very distant from her entire family, save for her younger brother Kennedy. At the age of 16 she was sent to Nightsong and married to Geoffrey Caron, heir to House Caron. She fell in love with her husband, and was completely devastated when he was killed by bandits just two years after their marriage. Now widowed and childless, Moira shamefully returned to Storm’s End. Two years later, in 79 AL, Minas arranged for his daughter to wed the elderly Lord Jarlath of House Estermont of Greenstone. They married, but three years later in 82 AL, Lord Jarlath passed away. (The cause of his death is still a mystery, and some evidence points to suicide while some points to murder) Moira bore Jarlath one daughter before his death, but the child passed away from an illness when she was only six years of age.

Moira, now rumored to be not only a husband-killer, but a child-killer as well, returned grudgingly to the Baratheon Court. It is of the opinion of many that the Baratheon daughter is cursed, and that Minas has banned his daughter from marrying a third time. Moira, now a sullen and dejected woman from a multitude of past tragedies, spends her days quilting within her chambers at Storm’s End.

Kennedy Baratheon
Third son of Minas Baratheon
Age 25

Kennedy, born in 65 AL, is the third son of Lord Minas Baratheon. Blessed with neither good-looks and charm or great strength on the field of battle, Kennedy is very different from his brothers. Being the third son, and relatively unskilled and unremarkable, he often goes unnoticed. He is not totally without skill, preferring to practice with a hunting bow or perfect his jousting, than strengthen his real combat skills. He often rides the woods of the Stormlands hunting with his friends and retainers. He was a frequent participant at many tourneys throughout the Seven Kingdoms, considering his lack of duties at Storm’s End. He is not close to his family, except perhaps his gloomy sister Moira, whom he takes pleasure in comforting.

Rhoswen Baratheon
Second daughter of Minas Baratheon
Age 22

Rhoswen was born in the year 68 AL, the last child of Minas and Caitlin. Her mother, the Lady Caitlin, died upon giving birth. It seemed the adoration Minas held for Caitlin passed to his youngest child upon his wife’s death. Rhoswen grew up in Storm’s End with all the lavish fineries the Baratheons could afford. Her father spared no expense to see to the girl’s happiness. She was a beautiful, dark-haired girl, with a charming smile and blessed proportions. Her beauty was known far and wide, even beyond the Stormlands. She frequented King’s Landing, and was considered a symbol of friendship between the Royal House and her own. Although many opportunities arose for Rhoswen to be married to vassals of Lord Minas, it is rumored he keeps her unwed for a chance at allying with one of the other Great Houses of Westeros. Rhoswen, due to the constant spoiling and pampering, is a vain girl and is greatly concerned with appearances and pageantry. Like her father, she strives for the recognition of House Baratheon by the other Great Houses and hopes their strong relationship with the Iron Throne will continue.

Keira Baratheon-Toyne
Lady of House Toyne, widow of Lord Lyonel Toyne
Sister of Minas Baratheon
Age 56

Fiona Toyne-Baratheon
Daughter of Lord Lyonel Toyne and Lady Keira Toyne
Married to her cousin, Canice Baratheon
Age 29

Princess Valerya Targaryen-Baratheon
Daughter of King Jaehaerys and Queen Alysanne
Wife of Orrin Baratheon
Age 33

In an attempt to stabilize waning relations with the Targaryen-descended Baratheons of Storm's End, Jaehaerys had his eldest daughter Valerya wed to that House's heir in the year 69 AL. Valerya, only thirteen at the time, recognized the necessity of the move and willingly did as her father wished, part of her expecting to reach Storm's End and find a valiant prince awaiting her there. Orrin Baratheon was, at sixteen, no such dashing adventurer, nor did he grow into one as the years went on. After more than twenty years, he hasn't even had the decency to take the throne of Storm's End from his aging and, to Valerya's mind, equally boorish father. But Valerya isn't bitter towards the family that abandoned her or the one that failed to live up to her teenage dreams - oh, certainly not. After all, she has her son, Kieran Tragar Baratheon, and she's certain that when he is Lord of Storm's End, he'll set things to rights. Not that she hopes for the death of her husband and her father in law. Oh, certainly not.

Kieran Tragar Baratheon
Son of Orrin Baratheon and Princess Valerya Targaryen
A Knight of the Storm Guard
Age 16

Born in 74 AL, Kieran Tragar Baratheon was a delicate blend of Old Westeros and Dragon’s blood. His father was the arrogant and ill-mannered Orrin Baratheon, whilst his mother was the lovely and haughty Princess Valerya Targaryen, firstborn daughter of the King and Queen. He was an exquisite specimen, donning the finest of the Baratheon physical traits blended with various Targaryen qualities. He was raised by his mother to think himself a prince, although he understood since childhood that his Targaryen blood had been tainted with that of the barbaric Storm Kings.

Orrin had nothing much to do with his son, which of course is what his mother desired. Canice Baratheon however took his nephew under his wing, teaching him all he knew of swordsmanship and combat. Currently he serves Canice as his squire, and undergoes constant training to one day soon be installed as a Knight of the Storm Guard. His aspirations are much loftier than mere Knighthood however, for one day he expects to be crowned Lord of Storm’s End. With the help of his mother and with the favor of his Uncle, it will surely come to pass…
